WhatsApp has been diligently enhancing its security and privacy features over the past few months, and now, they’re upping the ante once again. According to reports from WAbetaInfo, an online platform known for tracking WhatsApp updates, the messaging giant is working on a new feature that could streamline the account verification process for users. This new functionality would allow users to utilize their email addresses as an alternative login method, in addition to the existing phone number verification.
Currently, when logging into WhatsApp on a new device, users must enter their phone numbers and receive a verification code via SMS or phone call. While this method has been effective for most, it can pose difficulties in certain situations, like when users lose their phones or SIM cards, or encounter network and server problems preventing them from receiving SMS messages. In such cases, having the option to use their email addresses for verification could prove incredibly useful.
Notably, the email verification feature is expected to remain optional and is currently in development. Early sightings of the feature were reported by WhatsApp beta testers using version 2.23.16.15 of the app. While WhatsApp already allows users to provide an email address during the setup of two-step verification PIN, this would be the first time email is used for login purposes.
This new feature could be a welcome addition to WhatsApp’s already robust security and privacy options, including end-to-end encryption, disappearing messages, and biometric authentication. Not only might it make account recovery and device switching smoother, but it could also offer users a sense of relief knowing they have a backup option in case of phone-related mishaps.
